About 5-1-1

Established in July 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission, 511 is the nationally designated three-digit number for traveler information. Referred to as an N11 number, 511 was created to provide an easy-to-remember, three-digit number travelers could use to access road and traffic information from within the jurisdiction they were traveling.

The Arizona Department of Transportation deployed the statewide 511 telephone system in March of 2002 and has continued to enhance the system ever since. What started out as a system that only covered freeways and airports in Phoenix and Tucson now provides information for all ADOT roadways, special event travel and parking information, travel times on highly used certain corridors, transfers to some 20 transit agencies, information and transfer options for 50+ State and National Parks, and border wait times. The system also provides the most recent available information for specific AMBER ALERTS.

Arizona travelers can access the 511 traveler information line simply by dialing 511 from any landline and most mobile phones anywhere in the state. The Arizona 511 traveler information line can be accessed from outside the state by dialing 1-888-411-ROAD (7623). Most of the information is also available on the Web at

511 is maintained and operated by the Arizona Department of Transportation through cooperation with statewide, regional, and local partners
